Okay so idk if you remember me, but I talked about how i was a female freshman in high school in my engineering department. Well, in my class I've gotten quite sexist comments made to me, to the point where I'm doubting my entire future in engineering &I'm crying after class. Did you ever experience getting sexist comments? How did you deal with it?

I, as well as any other female trying to enter a male-dominated field, have absoluetly experienced sexism. People don’t think I’m smart when they first meet me and it always surprises people when I tell them I double major in mech and business. But I’ve learned to relish the fact that I can surprise people. And I love showing all the people that think I can’t handle it that I can handle eveything with grace and strength.

Never let ANYONE make you doubt yourself. If you decide that engineering is not for you because you realized you don’t like it, there is no shame in that. But to let others bully you into chosing something else will only allow them to dictate your life (and nobody but you should ever have that power).

Listen, you are trying to enter a currently male dominated field and as a result sexist/mysogonisitc people will always be there, and this is something you will have to get used to. But please try to remember that you are in high school (no more than a freshmen), the boys in your class haven’t reached a mature level yet. Don’t let them bother you, when you get older and enter university most of the men will be glad to have a female friend in the sea of testosterone (and the few who think they’re above you can suck it).

I hope this helps and don’t let the icky boys make you cry…they are not worth your tears or your energy. You are young and vibrant and have every option to choose from right now, don’t let others make those choices for you. You are stronger that that<3

Honestly it comes down to liking the actual subjects, deciding whether or not you’re ready to commit to doing it and wanting to end up in that field. When I was in high school I knew I enjoyed and was good at physics, chem, math, etc. At the time I was interested in aerospace and wanted to end up in that field and I was ready to commit to it and went for it. I didn’t really know exactly what I was getting myself into, but alas, here I am and wouldn’t have changed a thing.

But honestly hun, you’re a freshman. Just take the time to discover what you like and dislike so you can decide later on. You don’t need to know right now. You just need to have some fun and try and get through your teen years as easily as possible.
